In 1997, one of the most prestigious transatlantic golf championships
took place at Sotogrande's Valderrama golf course. Until then, Sotogrande's luxurious real estate development of some 5000 acres, stood quietly
in the wings as resorts to the east, such as Estepona
and Marbella , experienced a dramatic increase in foreign residents and
tourism. Sotogrande's debut on the world stage was repeated during the
American Express Championship - part of the new World Golf Championships
- in November 1999. Today, this magnificent resort has deservedly evolved
as one of the highest quality and most popular destinations on the Coast.
The marina development of Sotogrande is fabulous, with its Portofino-style
colourful buildings, surrounded by tropical landscaping against a backcloth
of blue sea and sky.
The Sotogrande port is important in its own right, being the first main
leisure harbour on the Mediterranean when approaching from the Atlantic
to the west. Located just 20 minutes from Gibraltar , Sotogrande attracts
foreign residents and tourists of every nationality - as well as Spanish
- but is understandably popular with the British who don't have to travel
too far to stock up on their M & S underwear and Marmite!!
Sotogrande accommodation includes some of the best hotels on the Costa
Del Sol, as well as luxury villas with pools, and country and seafront
apartments, many with views of the Rock with the Atlas Mountains on the
distant horizon.
Aside from Valderrama, La Cañanda and Sotogrande Golf are also
located here The latter, designer Robert Trent Jones considers to be his
"one of his best pieces of work". Two further courses at San
Roque and Almenara Golf Hotel and Spa are within easy reach. In short,
Sotogrande is the place for big time golfers, said to feature Spain 's
highest proportion of registered golfers at any one centre.
In addition, there are two beach clubs, tennis and paddle tennis courts,
an equestrian centre, a water-sports' centre (including windsurfing classes)
and the Sotogrande Golf Academy, recognised as being the most advanced
golf training facility in Andalucía, located next to the Almenara
golf course.
This southern tip of the Costa del Sol is also one of the leading venues
in the world for polo and the only place in Europe where the sport is
played throughout the year. Top ranking players come to Sotogrande to
take part in the numerous matches which are held regularly during the
summer at the Santa Maria Polo Club. The sport has a substantial following
and attracts an enthusiastic crowd.
Sotogrande lies within the Guadiaro estuary's protected natural area of
27 acres of marshland on the west bank of the River Guadiaro. The distinctive
microclimate of Sotogrande and terrain attracts a fascinating variety
of migratory birds, so is of particular interest to bird watchers.
The International School at Sotogrande accepts students from 2-18 years.
