In 1997, one of the most prestigious transatlantic golf championships took place at Sotogrande's Valderrama golf course. Polo in Sotogrande

Top ranking players come to Sotogrande to take part in the numerous matches which are held regularly during the summer at the Santa Maria Polo Club. The sport has a substantial following and attracts an enthusiastic crowd.

Sotogrande lies within the Guadiaro estuary's protected natural area of 27 acres of marshland on the west bank of the River Guadiaro. The distinctive microclimate of Sotogrande and terrain attracts a fascinating variety of migratory birds, so is of particular interest to bird watchers.
