In a narrow winding back street of San Pedro, Bodega San Pedro has been
in the same family for three generations, filling bottles with local wine
from enormous oak barrels which line one wall. Angeles shrugs her shoulders
when asked about 'progress' in the town. "The most important thing
is that the small shops remain," she says. "They breathe life
into a village."
In short, at its core San Pedro remains a refreshingly unspoiled pueblo,
and the fact that the centre is set back a kilometre from the beachfront
is undoubtedly a contributory factor.
Typically Andalusian, the heart of the town is its main church plaza framed
by lofty palm trees.
The surrounding labyrinth of streets are packed with intriguing small
shops, sidewalk cafés, bars and people, especially on Thursday
mornings - street market day. Shaded by orange trees, the Avenida del
Marques del Duero leads to the seafront promenade which one day, hopefully
soon will be extended to reach Marbella . A new marina for San Pedro is
also on the drawing board.
In Greek and Roman times, this part of the Costa Del Sol was celebrated
for its excellent fish, particularly tuna, as well as the fertile agricultural
land. Guadalmina, now a golf course and housing development on the southern
outskirts of town, was once a vast sugar plane plantation.
This former farming community enjoys a sheltered and ideal microclimate;
a fact well-appreciated when you head west out of San Pedro with the uninterrupted
views of the Sierra Bermeja mountain range. It's not unusual to see horses
grazing by the roadside or a couple of lumbering oxen wearing woolly hats
like tea cosies pulling a plough off on the horizon. Lofty eucalyptus
trees flank a dried up river bed and, instead of the rows of colour co-ordinated
beach umbrellas, ancient Arab watchtowers grace the beach.
San Pedro is also an excellent base for golfers with some of the Costa
Del Sol 's best-known golf courses within easy reach, including Los Naranjos
and La Dama de Noche (the only floodlit course on the Costa del Sol).
San Pedro has one International School , St George's School for students from 3-8 years.
